Beginning with three plays (Mary Chase’s Harvey, Ayn Rand’s The Night of January 16th, and Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol), the Morehead Theatre Guild was established in 1989 and has since brought season after season of entertainment to the community. A total of 85 shows have been performed across nearly 30 seasons, from comedies to dramas to popular musicals. Both onstage and backstage, hundreds of people from Morehead and Rowan County have come together to bring life to the area’s stages.
The Guild was one of several local organizations responsible for lobbying the creation of the Rowan County Arts Center in 2003, leading to the Center’s opening in 2007. Since then, the Center has become more than just a meeting place for the Guild’s leadership; auditions and shows are also held there, in a performance space on the second floor of the renovated courthouse building. This area was once the courtroom where all of Rowan County’s trials were held, making it an important historical site even before its conversion. Now, it is home to a beautiful stage, two dressing rooms, and sufficient room to seat over 125 audience members!
