Abuse

Abuse is a tragic reality for too many people, and an abusive situation can often be difficult to escape. If you find yourself being abused by a friend, loved one, or family member, the first thing to know is that it’s not your fault, and that anyone can be a victim regardless of age, background, or gender. There is never a justification for abuse—only excuses.

If you are a victim of abuse, you may be frightened or unsure of whom to trust. You may find that you have withdrawn from social circles or been isolated from people with whom you once had close contact. You may be experiencing threats or manipulation, ranging from promises of direct violence, to invasions of privacy (such as a partner going through your phone or Internet history), to claims that your abuse is your own fault. Abuse manifests in many different ways—physical, verbal, emotional, mental, sexual, and more—and you may have a hard time dealing with or leaving a relationship that’s turned abusive.
